Learning in the Museum

As part of her commitment to promoting the arts, and access to art for all, Prof Alison Kearney has, for more than a decade, worked with diverse audiences to develop visual literacy and ways in to understanding art in the art museum. Utilizing social constructivist, enquiry and experience-based learning methodologies developed from Vygotskian theories of social learning, Kearney has created interactive learning materials, and facilitated numerous workshops and seminars at Wits Art Museum in Johannesburg. Learning together, through making and sharing our interpretations of art are foregrounded in the workshops which have included printmaking, drawing, writing, and playing games in response to artworks on exhibition. Underlying Kearney’s approach to learning in the art museum is her conviction (shared with thinkers like Eisner, Tishman and Yenawine) that learning through engaging with artworks enables learning about diverse forms of expression, as well as develops critical thinking, creativity and reflexivity.
