Creating Belonging Through Arts Based Pedagogies

Prof. Alison Kearney shared her initial findings from a SoTL project, in which she developed and facilitated an arts-based intervention that included drawing activities in the first-year orientation program, to ascertain to what extent arts-based learning can contribute to creating a sense of belonging at university amongst new first year students. The hypothesis is that when students feel like they belong in a learning environment, they are more likely to succeed in that learning environment. Initial findings show that the arts- based intervention helped students connect with each other and gain insights into what was expected of them at university. These outcomes contributed positively to their sense of belonging.
